The Berlin Blockade

The Blockade was created on June 24, 1948 by the Russians Creating conflict between the two super powers. The Soviets created it in order to block off the western allies railway and road access to the sectors of Berlin under Ally control. The Soviet Union believed through this they would force the western powers to allow the soviet zone to start supplying Berlin with food and fuel thereby giving the soviets practical control of the entire city.

The Berlin Blockade also affected other forces than the United States and Russia. The United Kingdom was also unable to interact with western Berlin in which they had control over.

Also operations within the German boarders were halted since they could not drive convoys into and out of Germany thus only allowing the Soviets control over the area, which included western Berlin which fought primarily for democracy.

The Berlin Airlift

The Berlin Airlift was created in retaliation to the Blockade which was issued by the Russians. The Berlin Airlift was the immediate response and was created in order to carry supplies to the people of western Berlin.

The U.K. was the main supplier with its Royal Air force, but the U.S. also helped out with its own independent air force. Through these efforts and the lift over 200,000 flights were taken within one year providing up to 4,700 tons of daily necessities such as food, fuel and medical assistance to the people of western Berlin.

Along with the British and U.S. forces the Airlift consisted of air crews from other allies such as the Royal Australian Air force, The Royal Canadian Air force, the Royal New Zealand Air force and the South African Air force. All of these helping hands helped greatly in providing supplies which were needed to help the victims of western Berlin and the people saving them.
