Turmoil within Berlin: The Berlin Blockade and The Airlift

Overall Impact

The Berlin Blockade and it's big Impact

The Berlin Blockade had a big impact; it had started the arms race, Germany was divided into east and west and the NATO and Warsaw treaties were created.

After the blockade had ended the USA and the USSR which were basically the two super powers of the world at the time realized that they needed the advantage of nuclear weapons. The USA started collecting earlier than the USSR started to gain arms around the 1950s. The most nuclear weapon count of the USA had at one time around 32,500 nuclear warheads, which was around 1961 its peak of nuclear weapon creation.

The USSR started increasing their nuclear stockpile much later then the USA; but they had a much higher total of arms. They begun the collection of arms around 1955 and have a top amount of 40,500 warheads. The peak of the nuclear arms race for Russia was around 1987.

NATO and Warsaw

Nato was created by the Western Allies in 1949 to defend against Russia. The United States, Canada, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Italy, Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington on April 4th, 1949. There were 5 western states which suspected Russia for there intentions in Europe which is a reason for the creation of NATO. The NATO treaty partners all believed that believed that Russian Communism, an anti-democratic ideology, posed a new threat to the democratic world.

In order to protect the peace, any attack against the alliance would be met with heavy force by any means; this regional security arrangement for the defense of the North Atlantic area was valid for 20 years. Also if any actions that were not necessarily viewed as good NATO would interact. And in our modern society we are able to see the affects of NATO in Libya, which ultimately was created partially due to the Berlin Blockade.
